Preppy in Blue

It was overcast this morning, and I had one of those days where – in an effort to be stylish but warm enough – my entire wardrobe looked uninspiring to me.

The individual pieces I laid out seemed just … average. I had a class to attend, then a lunch, and I really wanted to wear a bright colour or two to counteract the grey skies outside.

Then after a little bit of trial and error, an unexpected combo of said ‘average’ pieces (plus a little fold here and there) led to what became my favourite outfit I’ve worn in a long time.

I felt so happy as I stepped out of the house – I felt comfortable, polished, colourful and still warm enough for whatever unpredictable weather the day brought.  Yay!

Plain long-sleeved White T-shirt, Dark Jeans

At this point I added a loose turquoise jumper (that’s sweater for my US side!) that I got last week. It’s a bit too big on its own, but I decided to try it layered on top of the white.

Pull longer sleeves out from underneath…

Fold back the top sleeve first…

Then fold the lower sleeve neatly around the the top fold…

Almost done!

Next I thought I should cover up the collar as it was a bit awkward, and luckily I’ve collected quite a few scarves over time, one of which turned out to be the perfect colours.

Add scarf in coincidentally perfect colours…

…and ‘Groove’ Hobo Boots

The finished look for class and lunch date.

Add a taupe blazer as a jacket for walking around outside. Done!

Orange Blossom

Gap Dress, Banana Republic Belt, Tyler Rodan Bag

I’ve come to appreciate summer dresses so much more now that I live in LA, a city where you can actually wear a dress like this out during the day.

I was lucky with the end of summer sales and ended up with a handful of dresses in gorgeous colours. I didn’t really get to wear them much though, as I promptly went on a month long trip somewhere where the weather was decidedly cooler.

I’ll probably need a separate entry to enthuse about the bag – which is quite possibly my favourite discovery this month.

A random heat wave in LA a week ago prompted me to wear this cheerful orange number out downtown, to the LA Women’s Convention. Sometimes just wearing a bright colour like this is enough to put a spring in your step.

Screening Style

The longer I live in LA, the more I realise that the key to style living in a city with unpredictable temperatures throughout a single day is layering. I’m certain there’ll be more exploration of that theme later, but for now another idea.

As I contemplate fashion I’m realising more and more it’s about the unexpected choice – taking risks wherever inspired in varying degrees. Sometimes it’s just that last minute change before you walk out the door, away from classic ‘matchy things’ towards a more unusual combination.

I felt inspired this way the other night when getting dressed to go to our cast and crew screening of my husband’s film. I get teased sometimes for the fact that I like to get dressed up, even a little bit, for things that you know other people will be wearing jeans and t-shirts to (especially, it seems, in Los Angeles). It makes me smile as I do have that tendency, but especially recently where I truly feel like the only way to live is to treat each day as its own special occasion.

The little unexpected change in this case was a switch from the black shoes to the more unusual combo of pale gold/nude heels.

These are my absolute favourite at the moment, a pair of Max Studio Marais pumps I picked up last year at DSW.  A year later and I’m loving them to the point of wanting them in every colour, only to find they don’t make them anymore, which seems to happen to me a lot. I think maybe I either catch on late or take my sweet time to get in to things that I buy.

Adding the little Marks and Spencers black jacket …

Add a few bracelets and a large ring …

Goldy/Leopardy scarf added – Layers Complete!

Beach Dress, City Dress

I think it’s probably apt that the first time I write one of these posts to put an ‘outfit’ out there, that it’s a mix between these two genres. I’ve always been comfortable living in a big city, but am probably a beach person at heart. This outfit was for a friend’s birthday lunch outside by the pool.

I got this dress from Benetton a couple of years ago, as I couldn’t resist the cut and colours. Since I think tie-dye can be hit or miss when overdone (plus the danger of giving on-lookers free-love trippy flashbacks), I thought I’d tone down the look with some neutrals in the belt and shoes.

Dress: Benetton

Belt: Banana Republic

Shoes: Steve Madden – Spring 2012

Nail Polish: Orly in Terracotta, my favourite this summer.
Bangles: No idea, but I love the combination of cream and dark bronze.
