Designer Discovery – Jewel Kade Jewellery

For the first Designer Discovery, I’ve chosen Jewel Kade Jewellery. A friend and I discovered them at the LA Women’s Expo last month. The beautiful, creative pieces caught our eye, and I soon realised there were about a dozen things on that one table I could have easily bought right there and then. Thankfully, I am being careful with expenses leading up to Christmas, and so instead I walked away with the catalogue which you can browse online here.

There’s  something so simple yet whimsical and nostalgic about their artisan pieces. I’d happily purchase any of the bracelets above, and I love the beaded boho necklaces with a ‘hook’ at the end for the various signature charms they make.

My very favourite piece is the ‘Enchanted Bracelet’ below. It’s just the perfect combination of industrial and delicate somehow.

Enchanted Bracelet by Jewel Kade

When I pointed it out, the lady behind the table laughed and said I had ‘wonderful, expensive taste’ – as I think this specific piece is one of the only ones that costs more than the others at $90. For how expensive the bracelet looks in real life, though, I felt that was still quite reasonable, which applies to the rest of the collection as well.  I think it’s safe to say I will be revisiting this designer for future gifts.

New Category – Designer Discovery

I feel like there is so much out there to discover that it’s sometimes hard to keep track. That’s why I love the idea of Pinterest and places like that where you can ‘pin’ a discovery and keep it somewhere in a semi-organised fashion.

I continuously come across new designers, products and ideas that I find inspiring, and so in the effort to share (and be semi-organised!) I’ve decided it might be fun to have a couple of new categories for regular posts.

This first one will be called ‘Designer Discovery’, where I would like to share and keep track of new designers I come across whom I fiind inspiring, and want to remember.

Looking forward to exploring how I can have some fun with this category idea, starting with the next post.

Preppy in Blue

It was overcast this morning, and I had one of those days where – in an effort to be stylish but warm enough – my entire wardrobe looked uninspiring to me.

The individual pieces I laid out seemed just … average. I had a class to attend, then a lunch, and I really wanted to wear a bright colour or two to counteract the grey skies outside.

Then after a little bit of trial and error, an unexpected combo of said ‘average’ pieces (plus a little fold here and there) led to what became my favourite outfit I’ve worn in a long time.

I felt so happy as I stepped out of the house – I felt comfortable, polished, colourful and still warm enough for whatever unpredictable weather the day brought.  Yay!

Plain long-sleeved White T-shirt, Dark Jeans

At this point I added a loose turquoise jumper (that’s sweater for my US side!) that I got last week. It’s a bit too big on its own, but I decided to try it layered on top of the white.

Pull longer sleeves out from underneath…

Fold back the top sleeve first…

Then fold the lower sleeve neatly around the the top fold…

Almost done!

Next I thought I should cover up the collar as it was a bit awkward, and luckily I’ve collected quite a few scarves over time, one of which turned out to be the perfect colours.

Add scarf in coincidentally perfect colours…

…and ‘Groove’ Hobo Boots

The finished look for class and lunch date.

Add a taupe blazer as a jacket for walking around outside. Done!

Midnight Blue Nails: Try the Trend This Weekend!

About a month ago I decided to go renegade and buy a blue nail polish when I discovered the shade ‘Sweet Peacock’ by Orly. I think with nail colours like blue it can be a bit hit or miss, but this one is just the right mix of bright, deep and glittery.

Just found this article today on Instyle.com and it gave me that self-satisfied feeling when you decide to do something new on your own, then find out later it’s trending. The feeling lasts for about a minute before I start to wonder, is that it, or did I follow a trend subconsciously when I thought it was completely my own idea earlier?

Do you ever get that feeling – whether high street has influenced catwalk or the other way around, and if we’re losing track? In any case – blue nails, people. It’s happening.

Orange Blossom

Gap Dress, Banana Republic Belt, Tyler Rodan Bag

I’ve come to appreciate summer dresses so much more now that I live in LA, a city where you can actually wear a dress like this out during the day.

I was lucky with the end of summer sales and ended up with a handful of dresses in gorgeous colours. I didn’t really get to wear them much though, as I promptly went on a month long trip somewhere where the weather was decidedly cooler.

I’ll probably need a separate entry to enthuse about the bag – which is quite possibly my favourite discovery this month.

A random heat wave in LA a week ago prompted me to wear this cheerful orange number out downtown, to the LA Women’s Convention. Sometimes just wearing a bright colour like this is enough to put a spring in your step.

Wish List – Boyfriend Watch and Leather Jacket

Boyfriend Watch and Leather Jacket

This coming weekend some girlfriends and I are going to check out the Rose Bowl Flea Market for the first time. I’ve heard it’s amazing, but also that it can be a little bit overwhelming. For that reason it’s probably good to go with a couple of specific things in mind, just not to get carried away.

Aside from anything that jumps out as the perfect Christmas present for someone I love, I’m going with two very specific items in mind.

For the last couple of years I’ve been on the look-out for the perfect soft leather jacket – something feminine but with just enough edge. Caramel and beige colours always appeal, as I think the black might be too tough for my look, but I’m always really taken in by strange colours as well like greens or greys.

The other item is a chunky ‘boyfriend’ watch. I don’t usually wear a watch but I love the way these look, I wore a silver one for about a year and loved the ‘cuff’ feel on my wrist and the bonus of knowing what time it is without checking my phone!

Wish List – Wedge Sneakers

  1. Wedge Sneakers

Each season I feel like there are one or two trends that actually catch your imagination – in my case it usually has to be something I can see myself wearing long past the trend itself, and incorporating in to my personal style wardrobe.

This season I think one of these trends is wedge sneakers. Something about the slightly pointy front and the wedge class up a cool, casual look that I think would probably go just as well under jeans as it would with leggings.

My initial instinct says that an black pair would be the most sensible purchase, as they would go with everything.

When I see ones like these great Rebel Glam pair , however, I find myself pondering how different a beige or light pair would be as a look.

It’s also tempting that they come in great colours like purple and orange, but realistically I know a classic colour would go a lot farther in my wardrobe.
